Video tutorial: Lucy Standing, Association of Business Psychology, on social wellbeing at work

Social wellbeing in the workplace simply can’t be overlooked since individuals need connection, according to Lucy Standing, vice chair of the Association of Business Psychology.

Speaking at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, she said social need and social closeness was important at work and that organisations needed to do more especially in the new age of no job for life.

Job observations, shadowing, networking and coaching all proved the value of considering social wellbeing, she explained. "The whole need for personal connection can easily be facilitated," she said.

She said benefits such as increased flexibility, trust and more focus on work life balance, were now much more important to employees than more traditional benefits such as pension and salary. "Going forward these are much more likely to be the sorts of benefits that will be tapping into this social need that people so desperately seek and want."

This video was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, held in London on 20 June.
