Video tutorial: Why you should beware of using technology to make bad processes more efficient

Whilst technology is great businesses must ensure it is genuinely helping rather than hindering and that it is not distracting staff from otherwise more valuable tasks, according to Roger Fairhead, VP people at AB InBev.

When looking at annual performance ratings for example, he said that technology was a great help, but the danger was that performance reviews were not very effective in the first place.

“We need to fix the issues and processes first and then use technology to deliver whatever it is more efficiently,” he said.

And he told delegates at the REBA Innovation Day that following his experience of being bombarded with feedback requests after a restaurant booking employers too have to be careful not to overwhelm their staff.

“Are we in danger of introducing this type of technology enabled excessive communication feedback and analysis in our own organisations without considering the value of the information collected or disseminated or the distraction this may have on our employees,” he said.

This video tutorial was recorded at the REBA Innovation Day, held on 23 November 2017.
