Landsec, one of the UK’s leading real estate companies, enhanced its benefits offering in 2024 with the launch of an EV scheme.

This initiative, driven by direct employee feedback, reflects a growing emphasis on aligning workplace benefits with evolving expectations and environmental goals.

In Autumn 2023, Landsec held focus groups to better understand what employees valued most in their benefits package. Employees were clear in expressing their desire for a benefit that aligned with sustainable practices and modern lifestyles, with EVs consistently emerging as a priority.

Michelle Rawnsley, group reward manager at Landsec, explained how the feedback shaped the decision-making process: “Our teams were clear about their interest in electric vehicles, so we acted on it.”

Getting the scheme up and running

Several factors influenced the decision to select the right provider, such as commitment to employee protection and data security, as well as the ability to implement the scheme efficiently.

The inclusion of lifestyle protections, such as coverage during maternity leave or illness, offered reassurance to both employees and the business. Additionally, Tusker’s ISO 27001 certification demonstrated robust data security standards - an essential consideration for Landsec.

The implementation process, which began in March 2024, was smooth and efficient, culminating in the scheme’s official launch in June.

“The implementation process was straightforward,” said Rawnsley. “Tusker maintained clear communication and ensured the rollout was smooth and timely.”

In the six months since its launch, the EV scheme has seen promising early engagement.

Around 30% of eligible employees have already created accounts, showing a strong initial interest. A recent engagement survey showed a 26-point increase in employees feeling that the benefits package offered is attractive.

At Landsec’s Benefits Expo in July, the EV scheme was a point of attraction, with Landsec employees visiting the Tusker stand to explore their options and learn more about how the scheme could fit into their lives. This showed the scheme’s appeal and the growing enthusiasm for green workplace benefits.

Securing a competitive edge

For Landsec, introducing an EV scheme was not solely about sustainability, but it also reflected the company’s commitment to remaining competitive in a growing talent market.

Many of Landsec’s peers had already adopted similar initiatives, and the company recognised the importance of offering comparable options to attract and retain top talent.

Rawnsley emphasised, “Many of our competitors already had EV schemes…we knew we had to act. And with the government’s push for sustainable transport, the timing felt right.”

The scheme also complemented Landsec’s broader approach to employee wellbeing, prioritising flexibility and relevance in its benefits offerings.

While the EV scheme is still in its early days, it has already demonstrated the potential to resonate with employees and strengthen engagement, creating a modern and inclusive workplace.
