REBA Thought Leaders: Why the gender gap is even worse when it comes to pensions

The gender gap is even worse when it comes to pensions than it is in pay, according to Eve Read, head of financial wellness at Mercer.

The company has found a huge 39.5% gender gap when it comes to pensions through its research. “Clearly pay is a major contributor to this. The core data suggests that’s around half of the issue but there are other influences that impact pay and therefore pensions,” she said.

Different approaches to investment between men and women is also having a huge impact with women typically taking a less risk-based approach to pension investment according to Read.

Read explained the methods that employers could take to reduce the gap – including raising awareness, providing financial advice and better education. “Help them to understand the impact of the decisions they make,” she said.
