Video tutorial: Mike Minett of Portabl.co on engaging freelancers and gig workers with benefits

In the new world of a freelance economy employers have to better engage their freelance and gig workers with innovative new benefits provisions, according to Mike Minett, founder of Portabl.co.

Speaking at the REBA Innovation Day he said 50% of the world’s workforce was already working as freelancers, driven by a number of different factors.

He said nearly three-quarters of freelancers were either uninsured or not insured at all. His business - which provides insurance and benefits for freelancers - has been built by freelancers, for freelancers, he said.

“When you are a full-time employee everything is provided for you [in terms of employee benefits]. When you go out on your own you’ve got nothing,” he said.

His business allows the provision of a customised bundle of services for such freelancers, allowing them to pay on a monthly subscription basis and pausing their membership if needed. “From that point on you only have a relationship with us, just like your old company used to look after you” he said.

This video was recorded at the REBA Innovation Day 2018, held in London on 22 November.
