Parental leave policies shift as employers prioritise family support

As the competition for top talent intensifies, UK organisations are increasingly investing in enhanced parental leave and family-friendly policies.

Bright Horizons has released its latest UK Parental Leave & Family Support Benchmark 2025, offering insights from over 300 employers across the UK and Ireland on how they’re evolving to meet the needs of working families.

The report reveals that family support is no longer just a perk- it’s becoming a strategic imperative. Enhanced leave entitlements, inclusive policies and practical support initiatives are helping employers attract, retain, and engage their workforce more effectively.

Enhanced leave on the rise

One standout trend is the growing prevalence of enhanced maternity and adoption leave. The benchmark shows that 66% of employers now offer at least 12 weeks of fully paid leave, with 21% providing 26 weeks or more- well above statutory minimums.

“Offering enhanced parental benefits gives organisations a competitive edge. It boosts engagement and retention, while signalling genuine care for employees,” said Chris Locke, executive director of Work+Family at Bright Horizons.  

The benchmark also points to a shift toward gender-equal parental leave. About 25% of employers now offer the same leave entitlement regardless of gender or parenting role - supporting shared caregiving and promoting workplace equity.

Locke added: “Supporting employees through all life stages - from becoming a parent to caring for older relatives - helps build inclusive, resilient workplace cultures.”

Support beyond time off

Forward-thinking employers are going beyond leave policies to offer holistic support for working parents and carers. Popular initiatives include:

  • Phased return-to-work programmes
  • Parental coaching
  • Childcare and eldercare support
  • Manager training
  • Employee networks for parents

These measures contribute to better mental health, reduced absenteeism, and long-term career sustainability.

Fathers and carers: A growing focus

The benchmark highlights fathers and carers as key areas for future policy development. Many employers are planning further enhancements to support these groups, budget permitting - reflecting a broader, more inclusive approach to family support.
