Research: a quarter of businesses now spend over £150 per head on employee wellbeing

There is a growing gap in spend on wellbeing between those employers with a dedicated wellbeing plan and those without.

The Employee Wellbeing Research 2019, published by the Reward & Employee Benefits Association (REBA) in association with AXA PPP healthcare, showed that almost a quarter of organisations that have a strategy are now spending more than £150 per head per year on employee wellbeing.

In organisations without a wellbeing strategy, over a quarter (27.1%) are spending nothing at all.

The report also revealed that median spending by employers with a strategy is between £26 and £50 per employee each year. In comparison, the median spend by organisations without a wellbeing strategy is £1 to £25 per employee.

Organisations with a wellbeing strategy were also more likely to see their wellbeing spend rise last year, the survey of 250 wellbeing, HR and employee benefits specialists highlighted.

Well over half (54.8%) of this group increased their spending in 2018, compared with fewer than a third (31.3%) of respondents with no strategy in place.

When it comes to spend for the next 12 months, almost half of all organisations, regardless of whether they have a wellbeing strategy in place or not, expect their spending on wellbeing initiatives to increase.

“It suggests that the majority of employers recognise the need to invest in the health and wellbeing of their staff,” says the report.
