Case study: Saint-Gobain’s health and wellbeing journey

When good health and wellbeing is at the heart of company culture, employees are healthier, happier and motivated to go that extra mile.

So how can you inspire people at work to feel differently about their health and wellbeing? How do you go about motivating them to take lasting steps towards living healthier lives? How do you speak in one voice to bring a diverse workforce together on one journey to better health?

We worked with construction innovators Saint-Gobain in the UK and Ireland, to help them find out.

Understanding Saint-Gobain

The first step was to understand the unique challenges Saint-Gobain was facing. Armed with this insight, a bespoke health and wellbeing programme was created that the company could implement right across their business.

It began with the Proactive Health Gateway – our interactive web-based portal that makes it easy for employees to participate, and in turn easy for large companies to collect the anonymous information they need about employee health risks. This data enabled Saint-Gobain to develop a wellbeing strategy that encouraged lasting behaviour change to reduce the health risks in their business.

Here’s how their three-tier programme worked:

Awareness

To transform attitudes towards health, Saint-Gobain needed to inspire employees and get senior stakeholders on board. They chose the name ‘Fit for Work, Fit for Life’ to bring their programme to life, and launched it through the Proactive Health Gateway.

The online Gateway and its Health Age Calculator helped show Saint-Gobain’s employees how to make the small changes to their lifestyles that can often add up to huge improvements to their health.

Engagement

Saint-Gobain then brought the initiative alive through onsite events such as health assessments, blood screenings and ‘Know Your Numbers’ days.

Participation events like this, coupled with regular targeted emails from the Gateway, ensured health was kept top of mind for employees. They were regularly given tangible information about their wellbeing, and Saint-Gobain received regular reports to monitor progress.

Momentum

Health champions trained across Saint-Gobain worked and continue to work to promote health and wellbeing and guide employees in person to the right support.

Anonymised data captured through the face-to-face health assessments and from the Health Age Calculator on the Gateway is used to bring continual targeted focus to the employees and enables Saint-Gobain to measure progress.

Saint-Gobain was one of the first companies to pledge towards 50,000 Years Younger Together – AXA’s ambition to dramatically improve Britain’s corporate Health Age, boost engagement in wellbeing and inspire employees to live healthier lives – and they’ve pledged to reduce their corporate Health Age by 4040 years by 2020.
