Video tutorial: How a benefits review enabled Shell to better meet the needs of its staff

A thorough review of benefits enabled Shell to revise its reward and benefits strategy to better meet the needs of a multi life-stage workforce in the UK and reduce costs.

Speaking at the REBA Reward Leaders’ Forum 2018 Sandra Perlaki, UK policy, benefits and services manager at Shell International, said the company started with a thorough review of where it stood against its competitors in terms of reward and then looked at the benefits it offered.

The company began an 18 month process of dialogue with internal stakeholders as well as focus groups with staff across the UK, benchmarking and specialist advice.

Perlaki said Shell also analysed the take-up of benefits and was able to get rid of some – such as Cycle to Work – which simply weren’t providing value for the business.

The review proved invaluable. “We delivered a revised suite of employee benefits that were simpler to understand, in most cases improved and at a lower cost to the company,” she said.
